50 Precious Words

Each year, children’s author Vivian Kirkfield hosts the 50 Precious Words story contest. The goal, as was Dr. Seuss’ in writing Green Eggs and Ham, is to write a children’s story using only 50 words. Green Eggs and Ham has 50 unique words, but about 700 in all.

Here is my entry for the 50 Precious Words contest.

The Mink

Moonlit snow on the riverbank glittered like diamonds as the mink began her night hunt.

A ripple enticed her to dive into the frigid hunting ground.

Seconds later, she emerged.

Writhing scales cast rippling rainbows on the white drifts.

She partook, thankful for her warm coat and the bountiful river.
